Latin lathyrus odoratus
The Royal Family of sweet pea is one of the finest climbing varieties available. This variety bears Purple/blue flowers that extend from the main vine on sturdy stems. Flowers are prolific, vibrant and fragrant. Climbs to a mature height of 5-6' in good growing conditions. This variety is self climbing with strong tendrils.
Growing sweet pea from seed is very easy but germination can be up to 3 weeks. Like regular peas, start these early while the soil is still quite cool but workable. These can withstand light frost so here in the prairies I will start them in early May. Directly sow them to a depth of 1/2" and to a final spacing of 4-5" apart. Peas are heavy feeders so make sure that you are feeding them with an organic fertilizer regularly throughout the season. Once temperatures begin to rise, the vines may have reduced flowering but will return as temperatures go back down in fall.
