Latin cichorium intybus
Radicchio is a cabbage-like Italian delicacy. Often grilled over fire, this heirloom variety is a summer delight. The Rossa di Verona variety is known for its tight compact habit and crisp broad red and white leaves. The distinct flavour profile of this variety makes it a highly sought after radicchio.
Growing radicchio from seed is quite easy. Although hot temperatures can make them go to seed so plan to start them early to avoid the hottest parts of the summer. They can also be started mid-summer to take advantage of cooler fall temperatures. Sow seeds 1/4" deep and space plants 18" apart. Matures in 85 days.
