Latin Lactuca sativa L.
Romaine Lettuce is an essential ingredient to your favourite Caesar salad. Lettuce is one of the easiest garden crops to grow and is ideal for harvest in both spring and fall. If you eat a lot of salads this can be a great way to reduce your grocery bill throughout the summer months and ensure you are enjoying pesticide/organic quality greens. Lettuce is generally a cool weather crop which makes it best when harvested before the high heat of mid summer. Lettuce also produces a shallow root system so planting in containers is entirely possible with this crop.
If you are direct seeding, plant lettuce in rows and space seeds approximately 2" apart (they are small so do your best). Cover very lightly as lettuce needs the light to germinate. Starting them early to get a head start is also an option as they will transplant readily. You will want to thin out your spacing to about 10" once they begin to grow or transplant at that spacing. Succession planting is a great option to ensure a continuous crop throughout the summer as long as weather permits. Time to harvest is approximately 70 days.
