Latin citrullus lanatus
This heirloom, high sugar content, short season watermelon is a favourite for northern growers. The pink flesh with a grey green rind produces a high quality and tasty fruit. It is a productive grower that yields fruit averaging 15lbs in weight. All watermelons need full sun, hot summers and will command a decent amount of space so plan accordingly (5-6' of space between rows). Like all melons, watermelons have male and female flowers on each plant and require bees for pollination. Avoid the use of insecticides to help bee populations in your garden. Also, planting of pollinators near your garden will help increase harvest of most fruits and vegetables.
Start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost or alternatively direct sow into the garden once soil temperatures are sufficient (above 21 degrees Celsius). Matures in 80 days.
