Latin Eruca Sativa
This is your traditional or common Arugula also known as Roquette. Arugula and Wild Arugula are botanically different. The former Eruca Sativa and the later Diplotaxis muralis. While both are highly nutritious and pleasant, they offer different flavour profiles. This variety is a strong tasting green and has its place in many culinary dishes and salads. We highly recommend harvesting early as it is known to develop bitterness if left too long. The first leaves that can be harvested come about a month after germination. Continually harvest young shoots from here on until flowering.
Growing greens, including Arugula, from seed is very easy. We direct sow out here at Pangea because they are so fast to develop (and we have a cooler spring). Be very careful of frost as leafy greens are highly susceptible. You can start them earlier indoors (3-4 weeks before last frost) to get a head start or to avoid the hotter parts of the summer. Arugula, like most greens, is a cool weather crop and has a tendency to bolt once the summer becomes too hot. We always plan out two crops. One in spring and then again in the fall.
