Latin Perovskia atriplicifolia
Perennial - Zone 3
Russian Sage is a highly sought after perennial in any northern garden. The late summer blooms move from a pale blue to a vibrant azure colour of blue. The long panicle style flowers become increasingly brilliant as the flowers mature. Russian Sage is a woody perennial that grows to a mature height of 3-4' and approximately the same width. Once the plant is mature they are incredibly easy to grow and maintain. They will tolerate poor soil, drought and a wide range of pH conditions. Russian Sage is also known to be deer and rabbit resistant which has been an increasingly important consideration in urban settings. Add this striking perennial to your garden today!
Growing Russian Sage from seed does take patience but is well worth the victory. Germination can take anywhere from 20 days all the way up to 120 days. I have had higher success rates by stratifying the seeds prior to starting. Maintaining moisture consistency will be very important throughout the process. Use a plastic covering to retain moisture but remove once they begin to sprout. Once they are of handle-able size plant seedlings into containers with a light growing medium. As long as weather is above freezing (both day and night) the new seedlings can start being acclimatized to the outdoors. Once acclimatized and fully rooted in their containers, they can be planted into their forever home. Once established, Russian Sage is drought tolerant but in the first year and when they are seedlings ensure that you water regularly. Give 2-3' of room between plants for them as they will quickly fill that space. Plant in full sun for best results.
