Latin brassica oleracea var gongylodes
This variety of wild cabbage is closely related to cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale and many more. If eaten raw it has a mild radish like flavour and if eaten cooked, resembles cabbage. This old heirloom variety is a staple vegetable in harvest gardens. Our favourite use for kohlrabi is as a microgreen as it has exceptional flavour at the young shoot stage.
Growing kohlrabi is very easy and can be done as microgreens in almost any container. If growing to maturity, sow seeds in rows 12-18" apart. Thin seedlings to a final spacing of 4-6". Matures in 55-70 days. Plant in full sun. Can be started later in the season for a fall harvest as it is quite tolerant of frost.
