Latin Aquilegia vulgaris

Perennial - Zone 2

This multi-coloured variety has tall sturdy stems that bear the beautiful signature columbine flower in white, cream, violet, rose, yellow and red. This is a very tolerant and hardy flower that will survive in climate zones down to Zone 2. In cooler climates columbine will do well in full sun but in warmer ones try to provide a little bit of shade. Flowers are stunning and can easily be used as cut flowers.

Growing Columbine from seed is quite easy. There are two options when seeding columbine, directly (spring or fall) or pre-starting. If you are pre-starting them you will have to refrigerate them (cold stratify)for at least a week. We also do this if we are directly seeding them in the spring time. There is also the option of sowing these seeds in the fall time. They will naturally stratify over winter. Do not bury the seeds as light will help them germinate. Expect germination to occur in 20-30 days. Keep well watered during this period. Even once established columbine does not survive well in long periods of drought.
