Latin lavatera trimestris
Lavatera is a beautiful addition to any home garden. Related to both hollyhock and hibiscus, it presents a flower that is a stunning combination of both. Although native to the Mediterranean region, this annual flower has naturalized easily within North America. Lavatera is drought tolerant and has a high resilience to pests and disease alike. Its flowers are not only attractive, they are highly sought after by hummingbirds, butterflies and many beneficial insects.
Growing lavatera is very easy to do. To grow its best, place lavatera in a full sun location if possible and we recommend directly sowing, as this plant does not transplant well. Wait until after the last frost of the spring season before sowing outside. If you need to get a head start due to a shorter growing season, you can start indoors 4-6 weeks early but transplant very carefully and not as a bare root. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continued flowering.
