Latin Lavandula Angustifolia

Perennial - Zone 5

Lavender is a flowering, fragrant variety of the common mint family. It has a long history that dates back to Greek times. It is used in many applications from fragrances to cooking to just simply floral aesthetics. Germination process is slow with lavender, and can take between 14 and 28 days in ideal conditions. Plant in full sun and be cautious with fertilization. Little to no fertilizer is needed for lavender. Also, avoid planting lavender in moist areas as it does not perform well in compact, high moisture ground. We like to grow ours in pots so that we can control these variables in the best way possible. Once you get to flowering though it will all be worth it. You will be bringing the spa home to you! This herb is loved for its pleasant fragrance and you will soon see why. The flower portion is also edible and can be used to flavor anything from ice cream to alcohol.

Growing lavender from seed is of moderate difficulty. They can be a stubborn seed and germinate slowly. Seeds that I have given up on have germinated 6 weeks after, in the middle of summer. I have directly sown these and grown them indoors with success. I often over seed a little bit because of the lower natural germination rates. If starting indoors, start 8-10 weeks before last frost. Use a heating mat for increased rates and speed of germination. Ensure that you 'harden' off plants before planting them outside.Lavender is perennial in Zone 5. Matures in 90-110 days.
