Latin stachys lantana

Perennial - Zone 4

This ornamental silvery perennial is an amazingly adaptable plant. The large 3" leaves and 12" mature height provide an interesting contrast to other typical perennials and annuals. The leaves are a blueish silver that have a felt like texture. In early summer expect a tiny mauve inflorescence that is attractive to pollinators. This is a great addition to any perennial garden looking to get some contrasting leaves. Great in rock gardens to give strong contrast.

Seeds will germinate on the surface and can be either started early indoors or direct sowed in either spring or fall. Can be planted in sun or partial shade with success. Hardiness is rated at Zone 4 but I have grown this in Zone 3 without issue. Growing Lamb's Ear is quite easy as it readily grows in many conditions. For best results lightly cover or sow directly on the surface. I press my seeds (without covering them) into the growing medium to prevent them from moving after watering or rainfall. If starting indoors, start 8-12 weeks before last frost. Germination can take up to 20 days at 20 degrees Celsius. Harden off plants before taking them outside. For those wanting to directly sow, you can successfully grow them in either spring or fall. For most places in Canada May or August are good months but I have done it further into fall as well. Ensure adequate water during the germination period, especially if it is abnormally hot during those months.
