Latin Allium porrum
The Large Musselburgh Leek is a hardy, heirloom variety known for its thick, tender stalks and mild, sweet flavour. Originally from Scotland, this cold-tolerant leek grows up to 2 inches thick and reaches 12-15 inches tall, making it perfect for soups, stews, and roasting.
Growing Large Musselburgh Leeks is easy, especially in cool weather. Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost, then transplant seedlings 6-8 inches apart in full sun and rich, well-drained soil when they are about 6 inches tall. To develop long, white stalks, plant deeply or mound soil around the base as they grow. Large Musselburgh Leeks take about 100-120 days to mature and can be left in the ground over winter for an extended harvest.
