Latin capsicum chinense

The Habanero pepper is a Caribbean and Mexican delight. This pepper boasts a fiery 350,000 Scoville's at its peak, which is 30-100 times hotter than a jalapeno. The habanero has intense heat but maintains a floral citrus-like flavor which is why it is loved for Caribbean cooking. Plants are highly productive if given the right conditions to grow. Pepper plants need full sun and hot summers to perform their best. Hot peppers do require a longer season to fully develop so start indoors 6-12 weeks before last frost. With habanero's in particular, watering should be deep but infrequent. They need some drought stress to provide the hottest peppers and if they are over-watered they will give a bitter flavor. Habanero and many of the super hot varieties of peppers take longer to germinate. Some will take up to 3 weeks. Using a heating mat will help encourage germination and may speed the process but give them extra time comparatively to other garden vegetables.

Growing peppers from seeds is very easy. The most important requirement is warm soil conditions. This is where a heating mat will work wonders and improve germination rates substantially. After germination, peppers require a lot of sunlight so place in your sunniest window or supplement with growing lights. Habanero peppers will mature in 80-100 days sometimes longer if conditions are poor.
