Latin rudbeckia hirta x gloriosa

Perennial - Zone 4

The Gloriosa Daisy is a beautiful specimen of the Black Eyed Susan family. The extra large and bi-coloured flowers are a stunning addition to your perennial garden. Known for its intense petal variegation, this flower is a beauty. The flower head will span 4-7" across. Grows to a mature height of approximately 3' making it a great middle plant in your flower beds. Great for full sun beds as it is reliable in most soil conditions and tolerant of both heat and drought.

Growing Rudbeckia from seed is very easy. You can either grow indoors for a head start or directly sow into your garden. If growing indoors, start 8-10 weeks before last frost and follow a stratification process. Sow seeds in a soilless mixture. Germination can be a little slow with this one so be patient. Expect 2-3 weeks at approximately 20 degrees Celsius. Grow cooler (15 degrees Celsius) after germination to prevent stretch. Ensure that you harden properly before placing them in a full sun location. If directly sowing into your garden, you can sow in either spring or fall. Seeds that are sown in fall take advantage of natural stratification, which will increase germination rates. Seeds that are directly sown will flower the following year. Hardy to Zone 4.
