Latin lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead'
Perennial - Zone 4
This compact and hardy variety is a great choice for the northern gardener. Comes with all the benefits of traditional lavender but in a smaller habit. The fragrant flowers are very attractive and are great for potpourris. The grey-green foliage is a wonderful contrast within perennial gardens. This variety of lavender also makes an excellent choice for rock gardens.
Growing lavender from seed is a very rewarding experience. They are not quite as easy as growing most vegetables but it surely is worth it. For best results grow these indoors. Place seeds in a germination mixture and cover lightly. Wet the mixture and place in the freezer for about a week. Remove from freezer and allow mixture to return to room temperature. Seeds should germinate in about 3 weeks. Watering from the bottom is ideal. Do not use a plastic cover for these seeds. Lavender does best with lower humidity and good air flow. Plant in soil with good drainage and full sun.
