Latin petunia x hybrida
The earliest flowering variety delivers a great petunia for pots or hanging baskets. The Dreams™ Midnight colour is a deep violet that gives hints of blue blooms sitting atop dark green foliage. Although great for hanging baskets in our opinion, these are not the full blown trailing types like the Wave series. These are incredibly well suited and superior to most other petunias for ground level pots.
Growing petunias from seed is easy but they must be given the right conditions and enough time. Seeds should be sowed into a soilless mixture or jiffy pellets 10-12 weeks before last frost. Slightly compact and pre-wet your growing mixture using lukewarm water with some added sulphur (to act as a fungicide). Press seeds into surface using a dibbler and cover seeded flats with plastic to conserve moisture. Bottom heat should be used when germinating petunias and avoid watering with cold water. Remove plastic covering as soon as signs of germination occur. Once out of the germination stage, grow petunias on at room temperature (18 degrees C) for the next 4-5 weeks and transplant at the end of this period. Reduce temperatures to 13-16 degrees Celsius if possible for the remainder of growth for the best and most dense growth habit.
