Latin citrullus lanatus

The Crimson Sweet heirloom variety was developed in 1963 by Kansas State University. This variety produces large round shaped melons that average between 15 and 25lbs in weight. You can expect a dark red interior and sweet flesh. The Crimson Sweet variety is commonly grown as the commercial variety due to its great flavor, storability and vigorous production. As a bonus, this variety is also known for its disease resistance.

Watermelons need full sun, hot summers and will command a decent amount of space so plan accordingly (6-8 feet between rows). Like all melons, watermelons have male and female flowers on each plant and require bees for pollination. Avoid the use of insecticides to help bee populations in your garden. Also, planting of pollinators near your garden will help increase harvest of most fruits and vegetables. Start indoors 4 weeks before last frost preferably in plantable peat or coir pots. Matures in 80 days.
