Latin abelmoschus esculentus
Okra is a great addition to many gardens yet sadly it is often overlooked. It is very easy to grow, matures quickly and provides a bountiful supply of light green edible pods. These pods are delicious when steamed, stuffed or used in soup. The plant itself is often grown for its ornamental qualities as much as its edible. The hibiscus like flower provides a stunning display.
Growing Okra from seed is very easy. The most important thing is to ensure temperatures are sufficient. Wait until nighttime temperatures are consistently 15 degrees Celsius before directly sowing into garden. Soak seeds overnight to speed up germination (7 to 21 days). Okra matures in only 50-60 days. Harvest seed pods when they are only 2-3" long and still tender. Young leaves can also be harvested and made into chips much like kale. Okra loves heat which makes it a great option to grow in black containers on patios or balconies.
