Latin melothria scabra

The Mexican sour gherkin or "mouse melon" is the fruit of Melothria scabra vine and is native to Central America. Cucamelons grape-sized fruit are a fan favourite for eating fresh out of the garden. Harvesting them when they are only 1" long gives a refreshing fruit that is a mix between a lime and a cucumber.

Cucamelons are easy to grow but for consistent germination should be started indoors 4-8 weeks before last frost. Cucamelons are fairly drought tolerant and disease resistant. They prefer hot weather and need to grow in full sun. Ready in 65 days but germination period can be up to 4 weeks so give enough time for them to germinate prior to planting outside.
