Latin Asclepias tuberosa

Perennial - Zone 3

This beautiful perennial is renowned for its ability to attract butterflies to the garden. In fact Milkweed is critical as the sole host plant of the Monarch butterfly. The speciosa and incarnata varieties are the cocoon setting plants but tuberosa is a valuable source of nectar. Large cluster flowers in mid summer give way to attractive green pods and a stunning show when planted in clusters. No butterfly garden or pollinator garden should be without Butterfly Bush, especially to help rejuvenate the endangered Monarch butterfly.

Planting milkweed from seed is very easy. Scatter seeds on top layer of moistened growing mixture and cover lightly. Water thoroughly, cover with plastic and place in refrigerator for 3-4 weeks. This form of stratification greatly increases germination rates. Once removed from the refrigerator, place onto a heating mat to speed germination. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into larger containers if outside temperatures are still too cold. Transplant into garden once the risk of hard frost has passed. Start this process 10-12 weeks before last frost. Plant in a full sun location for best results.
