Latin Spinacia oleracea
Spinach has been a regular part of European gardens since the 1400's and it first appeared in American seed catalogues in 1806. Bloomsdale longstanding spinach is one of the oldest spinach varieties in North America. First cultivated in 1874 by D. Landreth & Sons Seed Company of Philadelphia this came from a uniquely monoecious spinach plant. Spinach has been cultivated for over 2,000 years in Iran and it is commonly a dioecious plant (meaning each plant is either male or female). Due to a genetic variation, the Bloomsdale longstanding came from a singular monoecious plant. Not only was it unique in this regard, but it was a fast growing, high yielding and disease resistant variety. This variety also will resist flowering making it great for late spring crops.
When growing spinach ensure that you plant in full sun and plant early or late in the season to avoid the hottest parts of the summer. Even though this variety resists flowering, all spinach is grown best in cooler weather. Bloomsdale longstanding is great for containers as well. Its upright habit will make harvesting especially easy in containers. Once the threat of frost is gone, direct sow this variety into your garden or containers. Matures in approximately 50 days.
