Latin Beta vulgaris
Bull's Blood Beet is a crimson red heirloom variety that is renowned for its deep colour and great flavour. Introduced in the 1840's, this beet has been a go-to for homesteaders and hobbyists alike for many years. These beets have nice crisp flesh and flavourful earthy tones. A great, colourful addition to any salad. The Bull's Blood Beet grows to a 2-3" diameter but can be harvested when smaller for the best flavour.
Growing beets from seed is very easy. Direct sow into a freshly tilled garden once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. As with most root vegetables, loosening the soil is important for full development of root. Once germination has occurred, beets must be thinned to 3-4" apart for best development. Matures in 55 days.
Use the tender shoots that you remove as a great Microgreen addition to a shake or salad.
