Latin Solanum melogena var. esculentum
The Black Beauty Eggplant is one of the oldest and most popular varieties around the world. Grown for well over 100 years, this open-pollinated heirloom variety delivers high yields and no spines. Black beauty is a variety that is well suited for shorter seasons and also for smaller gardens. This variety, because of its compact and upright habit is also a good candidate for container growing. Even with a reduced habit you can expect 8-12 fruits per plant. Black Beauty is a great addition to your garden and can be roasted on salads, used as a meat substitute or if you really want to get crazy, Moussaka. Nothing better than truly fresh vegetables at the table.
Eggplants are relatively easy to grow but they need warmth to perform at their best. Wait until nighttime temperatures are consistently above 15 degrees Celsius to leave them out (if in containers) or plant them in the garden. A few nights of cooler temperatures will be ok but too many of them and it may stunt the development of your eggplant. Eggplant also will need full sun and well-drained soil for best results. Start these 8-10 weeks before last frost. Germination for eggplant is 7-14 days. Germination rates of eggplant are a little lower than other seeds so expect 60-70% to germinate (we always put a little extra in to compensate).
